Minimum Wage Jumps to $17.40 in California for 2027 — Here's What Your 'Raise' Really Buys

California's minimum wage climbs to $17.40 an hour on January 1, 2027, as Washington, Connecticut, New Jersey and Michigan hike theirs too. But with unemployment above the national rate and businesses cutting shifts and closing doors, workers are getting a bigger number on a shrinking paycheck.

Workers in California, Washington, and Connecticut are getting a pay bump on January 1, 2027 — whether their employers can afford it or not. California’s minimum wage climbs from $16.90 to $17.40 an hour, Washington’s jumps from $17.13 to $17.73, and Connecticut’s rises from $16.94 to $17.48, Fox News reports. New Jersey ($16.48) and Michigan ($15.00) are hiking theirs too. Every one of them leaves the $7.25 federal floor — untouched since 2009 — in the dust.

Seattle is the canary in the coal mine. The city’s minimum wage hits $22.14 in 2027, nearly $4.50 above the state rate, after a 2025 rule forced even the smallest businesses onto the same inflation-adjusted wage. Some restaurant owners who later closed their businesses cited rising labor costs among the financial pressures they faced. Angela Rosen, who runs three Seattle spas, told The Jason Rantz Show she had to cut her front desk — wiping out 12 shifts a week across two smaller locations.

Here’s the part nobody’s putting in the press release: Washington’s unemployment rate hit 4.9% in August — above the 4.1% national rate and up from 4.6% a year earlier, according to the state Employment Security Department. The state lost an estimated 900 jobs that month, including 2,300 information-sector jobs, and professional and business services employment is down 13,100 from a year ago.

Conservative commentator Jason Rantz put it bluntly to Fox News Digital: “Democrats appear to be doing everything they can to make the business climate in Washington more untenable.” He added: “Our unemployment rate is higher than the national average and we’re losing tech jobs left and right. Democrats have no answers. They’re just making their problems worse.”

California’s healthcare workers — many of Unified Savers’ own people — already live in a higher-wage world: their minimums rose again on July 1 to between $19.28 and $25 an hour depending on the facility, the NY Post reported. But as economist Wayne Winegarden of the Pacific Research Institute told The Center Square, these hikes are “deceptively kind” — “in practice, it destroys opportunity and worsens the business environment.” Employment Policies Institute research director Rebekah Paxton warned the increase will raise the cost of living and limit job opportunities for Californians.

What they’re not telling you

A fifty-cent raise that arrives by automatic inflation math isn’t a raise — it’s the system admitting your dollar is worth less and handing you back the difference while calling it generosity. The wage floor is rising fastest exactly where the job market is weakest: Washington is bleeding tech and business-services jobs while Seattle sprints toward $22.14. Higher hourly pay means nothing when your shifts get cut, your front desk gets eliminated, or your restaurant doesn’t reopen. Workers don’t need a bigger number on paper. They need hours, jobs, and a paycheck that survives the grocery bill.
